I had had the BEST time camping with my friends, and I was heading home, from Wenatchee, back to Bellingham. There was the smell of smoke in the air, and black singed toothpick pine trees dotted the mountain on the other side of the Wenatchee River. As I was leaving Leavenworth, I drove around a sharp corner. There on the guardrail sat 12-15 exhausted firemen in dirty, yellow protective gear, the river, and crusty burned hill behind them. It was a National Geographic moment, and I missed it. I immediately wished I had my camera handy, but had to lock that moment in my mind instead.
